In the Zulu language, "Zulu" means "The People of the Sky Heaven." This indigenous group extended beyond the borders of South Africa. In the 19th century, the Zulu were led by Shaka Zulu, or "Shaka the Great". At the same time the British were colonizing South Africa. However, Shaka conquered neighboring kingdoms, including the Ndwandwe Kingdom in 1818, expanding his empire. He was a very charismatic leader, and was vital to the Zulu resistance. Unfortunately he eventually lost to the British and was succeeded by King Cetawayo. Under King Cetawayo the Zulu Empire was divided into thirteen kinglets and ultimately dissolved. Shortly after defeating the Zwide, Shaka adressed his army,
"Great nation of Zulu
You have shown courage against a superior enemy. The nations that spoke of you contempt are chilled by your songs. Kings and princes shiver in their little thrones. Enemies flee to hide in the mountain caves."
